The Frey Ranch Malt House consists of a one-of-a-kind malting drum designed and constructed by owner, Colby Frey, and local welder Arne Martin. This process is what sets Frey Ranch apart from other distillers. The Malt House features a steep tank which separates the viable and unviable seeds (the ones that won’t germinate), It also cleans, hydrates and oxygenates the grain before it goes into the malting drum. Once in the malting drum, the grain is exposed to the ideal geminating conditions; heat, moisture and a constant circulation of fresh air. Once a small rootlet has appeared on the grain the drying process begins to stop all future growth. The estate grown grain is then ready to be handled in the distillery. This process is extremely important because it creates enzymes in the grain that help with flavor and fermentation.
